The Valenciennes Hoard : The Buried gold coins of the Sun King

The Treasure of Valenciennes remains one of the most spectacular numismatic discoveries ever made in France. Unearthed by chance in 1949, this treasure contains thousands of gold and silver coins, bearing witness to the wealth, military strategy, and artistry of coinage during the reign of Louis XIV. Today, it continues to fascinate historians, collectors, and numismatic enthusiasts alike.

A fortuitous discovery by Giuseppe Corrias

On August 30, 1949, Giuseppe Corrias, a construction worker in Valenciennes, made an extraordinary discovery during postwar reconstruction work. While digging in what seemed to be an ordinary plot of land, he unearthed a small barrel filled with 2,800 gold coins weighing a total of 48 kilograms of precious metal along with 6,000 silver coins amounting to 240 kilograms.

This remarkable discovery quickly drew the attention of numismatists and historians alike. The Treasure of Valenciennes is now regarded as one of the largest hoards of royal coinage ever found in France, and its coins have become key references for the study of 18th-century economy and the art of coinage.

Gold – Louis d’or aux insignes

A treasure Buried during the War of the Spanish Succession

According to experts, the treasure was likely hidden after the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709, one of the major engagements of the War of the Spanish Succession. This battle pitted the French forces commanded by the Duke of Villars against the Allied troops led by the Duke of Marlborough.

The historical context suggests that the treasure was meant to safeguard royal wealth and military funds. In this sense, the Treasure of Valenciennes is a true war treasure, combining military strategy and economic foresight. Each recovered coin thus stands as a direct witness to the turmoil of the era and to the ways in which treasures were hidden to survive times of conflict.

Gold Louis d’Or : Testimonies of Monetary History

The Treasure of Valenciennes consists mainly of Louis d’Or coins minted under Louis XIV, originating from various French mints such as Paris, Lyon, and Troyes. These coins illustrate the evolution of style and craftsmanship in royal coinage.

Some of the pieces were later dispersed on the collectors’ market, allowing enthusiasts to own a tangible fragment of history. For numismatists, these coins are valuable not only for their precious metal, but also for the historical wealth they embody. Each Louis d’Or tells the story of regiments, military campaigns, and the prosperity of the French monarchy.

Why the treasure of Valenciennes still Fascinates

The Treasure of Valenciennes is far more than a mere hoard of gold and silver coins, it is a unique testimony to the history of France.

Even today, this treasure continues to captivate historians and enthusiasts alike, reminding us that sometimes, history emerges where we least expect it.
