Description:

Coin with all bright original luster. Pleasant appearance.

Created in 1360 after the signing of the Treaty of Brétigny, to pay the ransom of the king, who had been captured at the Battle of Poitiers (1356).

Obverse: Jean II on horseback, galloping to the left, sword raised. He wears a crowned helmet topped with a fleur-de-lis and, over his chainmail, a fleur-de-lis-adorned surcoat. The horse’s caparison is also decorated with fleurs-de-lis.

Reverse: Floriated cross with a quatrefoil at the center, enclosed within a lobed quadrilobe ornamented with palmettes and flanked by four open trefoils.
