Coin from the Coëx Miller’s Hoard.
This group of coins was discovered in the early 20th century by the great-grandfather of the current owner in an old windmill located on his property, at the place called L’Éponge, in the commune of Coëx (Vendée). The coins are believed to have been hidden inside the mill, which has since disappeared.
Passed down from generation to generation, the hoard has remained within the family to this day. The owner’s grandfather entrusted the coins to his grandson during his adolescence.
The hoard consists of 119 coins: 83 écus and 36 half-écus, dated from 1649 to 1705, mainly from the recoinage issues of 1690 to 1705. Most of the coins show little circulation and display concretions and traces of oxidation.
The coins originate primarily from the mints of Rennes, Nantes, and La Rochelle, with a few peripheral mints (Paris, Rouen, Tours).
The hoard benefits from official authorization for free disposition issued by the DRAC Pays de la Loire, with the support of the Cabinet des Médailles of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
