During the reign of Louis XV, the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, such as Martinique and Guadeloupe, were major French colonies. They played a key role in the economy through the production of sugar and other tropical goods, relying on plantation systems that exploited enslaved African labor.

These territories were also central to Franco-British rivalries, particularly during the Seven Years’ War. After several conflicts and periods of occupation, they were ultimately returned to France in 1763 under the Treaty of Paris.
