Coin delivered with certificate.

This interesting coin is part of gold and silver coins which were most probably buried during the American civil war. They were buried along one of the oldest stagecoach roads in Alabama, within 3 miles of what is now downtown Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The coins had been placed in a cloth bag which in turn was most likely placed in an iron box before burial approximately 2 feet underground. The bag had almost entirely rotted away and the box had turned entirely to rust.

The coins were unearthed in the late 1990’s by the property owner who was digging post holes for a privacy fence. A total of 276 coins were recovered dated from 1746 to 1860. Eight of the coins were U.S gold 1$ and 2,50 denominations. The remainder are silver consisting of 195 U.S Half dollars, 66 U.S quarters, 4 Mexicans silver coins, 2 French silver coins and a single counterfeit seated Liberty Half dollar.

Attempts to identify the owner of the property who may have originally buried the coins have been complicated by the fact that the property was owned by at least 3 and possibly 4 different owners during the war.
