Description:

Processional reliquary cross in silver. 19th century.
Very beautiful patina. Damage to the glass on the surface, with a small loss. Slight bending at the 3 o’clock position on the right arm of the cross.

A relic identified by its handwritten authentication label “Ste Épine” (Holy Thorn), referring to the Crown of Thorns of Jesus Christ.

Maker’s mark M ★ G (MG with a star). This mark belongs to the Annecy silversmith Maurice Guillot, who registered it in 1836, marking the official beginning of his activity as a master silversmith.

In 1852, he registered a new mark bearing the same initials, this time accompanied by a caduceus.

His documented period of activity therefore lies mainly between 1836 and 1852, during the Sardinian period (Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia). Maurice Guillot is best known for silver liturgical objects (chalices, ciboria, and related items).

Sardinian “sun” hallmark of Chambéry, corresponding to the control mark of the Chambéry assay office, certifying the place where the metal was tested within the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.

Sardinian hallmark with a crowned eagle, first-grade silver standard, corresponding to the official guarantee mark for silver in the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia.

A very rare historical object.
