Extremely rare medal showing even wear. Very fine example.

Plain edge. Weight: 121.4 g – Diameter: 60.8 mm.

Awarded by the Six Guilds of Paris merchants. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier. Confronted busts of the King and Queen.

Reverse: A dolphin, on which rests a rudder adorned with fleurs-de-lis, stands upon a sea covered with merchant ships.

The long-awaited heir to the throne, Louis Joseph Xavier François, was born on October 22, 1781, in Versailles and fell seriously ill at the age of five with rickets. Around mid-1789, he also developed tuberculosis, from which he died on June 4, 1789, in Saint-Denis, one month before the storming of the Bastille.
