Sablons Hoard : An Exceptional Discovery
In 1997, while strolling along the banks of the Huisne, a tributary of the Sarthe, a couple from Le Mans made an unexpected discovery. On the ground, a few golden glimmers caught their attention: gold coins had just been unearthed.
This treasure, now known as the “Sablons Hoard,” consists of 152 gold staters. These coins belong to three distinct monetary series. The first features a hippocampus depicted as a crest. Although traditionally attributed to the Veneti, this origin has recently been called into question by experts. The other two series display a loop engraved on the cheek and are attributed to the Aulerci Cenomani, a Gaulish tribe from the region.
This remarkable discovery provides valuable insight into the trade and monetary practices of the Gaulish peoples on the eve of the Roman era.
