Pedigree :
Recovered from the Rill Cove shipwreck.
The Rill Cove shipwreck is an unknown cargo vessel that is attributed to 16th-century Spanish origin. Records indicate that local salvage in Rill Cove (Cornwall, England) began around 1618. It was re-discovered in 1975 by Ken Simpson and Mike Hall, salvaging and selling an estimated 3,000 coins. All issues were silver cobs, mostly Mexican types, but with some originating from PotosĂ and Spain. Many of the coins were marked with Philip II or Philip III, which date from 1555-1598 and 1598-1605. Other artifacts include an iron cannon, a wrought iron swivel gun, and a banded breech-loading gun. As of 1976, the wreck site has been secured under the Protection of Wrecks Act and is managed by Historic England. However, the site is frequently visited, with coins and other artifacts are still being recovered.
