The Lincoln Highway Treasure
The Lincoln Highway Treasure was found in an abandoned house, just off the iconic U.S. highway. It contained thousands of silver coins including high quality Morgan dollars.
The Lincoln highway American treasure
Thousands of drivers have used the Lincoln Highway since its creation in September 1912, at the initiative of entrepreneur Carl Fisher. It is considered the oldest U.S. road crossing the country and the first to accommodate cars from east to west.
Carl Fisher estimated the cost of a transcontinental gravel road to be about $10 million and sought only private funding. About 3,000 miles still separate Times Square in New York from Lincoln Park in San Francisco. This mythical road became even more so with the discovery of a treasure.
Morgan dollars prized by numismatists
Little did the travelers know that the quaint little roadside house they passed by was hiding a fortune. Thousands of silver coins were found in this dwelling in the Pennsylvania countryside. The chest contained more than 8,000 Morgan dollars. Nicknamed the Lincoln Highway Hoard because of its proximity to the motorway, the Lincoln Highway Hoard was certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®).
The haul contained some superb coins. Some are of rare dates to the delight of many numismatists. Other Morgan dollars never circulated and came directly from workshops of the US Treasury. This is the reason why most of the coins from this treasure are in splendid condition and have kept their original shine. Some of the silver coins even have an additional visual appeal with an exceptional rainbow patina. They are highly prized by collectors.
This important discovery ranks the Lincoln highway treasure amongst the most prestigious Morgan dollar treasures in the United States.
