Liard Mint error – Nantes – struck planchet 1/2 sol – Brochage error

950€

Description:

Coin with a pleasant appearance.

Extremely rare double minting error on this Louis XVI liard, struck on a planchet originally intended for another denomination.

The weight corresponds perfectly to that of a half-sol planchet. Its diameter, 22.9 mm, is slightly smaller than the diameter usually observed for half-sol coins, which is generally close to 25 mm and may decrease to approximately 24.5 mm on the smallest planchets.

This unusual feature could be explained by the conditions under which the coin was struck in the press: another coin may have become interposed during striking, thereby reducing the pressure applied. As the planchet was struck without a restraining collar, it would consequently have failed to spread sufficiently, which could account for its limited diameter of 22.9 mm.

This is a particularly spectacular and highly unusual minting error. This is the first time we have encountered an error coin combining such exceptional characteristics.
