Coin from Messing Hoard with old tag.

Hoard of coins discovered at The Bungalow, Messing, in August 1975. Inquest to follow. 2222 coins of Charles I were found in a bowl-shaped earthenware pot in the front garden at this address. They were turned up by a mechanical digger which was levelling the garden. The pot was broken. The coins were minted in 1640 and picture the Royal Coat of Arms on one side and the King riding a horse on the other. The hoard was probably buried during the 1648 siege of Colchester. 134 of the coins are on display in Colchester Museum.
